LEAF at Number 10

Last week, I had the privilege of attending a farming lunch held at 10 Downing Street, hosted by the Prime Minister and attended by our two new Ministers and other agricultural leaders. There was much talk about the future of farming and its economic resilience, and how politicians and businesses can work with farmers to capitalise on opportunities in the sector. I will be following up on some of the issues over the next few weeks and inviting Messrs Paterson and Heath to visit a LEAF Demonstration so they can see first hand what LEAF farmers are doing to meet some of the challenges highlighted in our discussions.

We will also be picking up on the theme of food resilience at our President’s Event on the 14th November where Professor Charles Godfray, co-author of the Foresight Report, will be our key note speaker, who will set out the next steps towards more sustainable farming systems.

I hope many of you will be able to join us for a lively and thought provoking day.

LEAF’s President’s Event 2012: The Changing Faces of Sustainability

Date: Wednesday 14th November

Time: 10.00 am – 3.30 pm

Venue: HSBC Tower, Canary Wharf, London

This year’s President’s Event will bring together experts in sustainable food and farming issues. Led by the co-author of the Foresight Report, Professor Charles Godfray, Hope Professor University of Oxford, speakers will examine and discuss the key issues involved in building more resilient food systems across the globe and how farmers, scientists, academics and society at large can meet the significant challenges ahead.

President's Event

This year we have extended the event to include a number of speakers representing various stages of the food chain, including David Pendlington, Head of Sustainable Sourcing at Unilever, Dr David Barling from City University’s Centre for Food Policy and LEAF Marque farmer, Andrew Nottage. In the afternoon, we will have a panel discussion exploring the last 21 years of LEAF and consider what the hopes and aspirations were for LEAF as a fledgling organisation and, importantly, whether LEAF has met these expectations. The panel will feature former LEAF chairman, David Richardson, current chairman Stephen Fell, new LEAF Demonstration Farmer, Chris Newenham, the first LEAF Demonstration Farmer, Robert Lawton, and Lord Deben, who launched Robert Lawton as LEAF’s first Demonstration Farmer in 1991.

The event, takes place on Wednesday 14th November 2012 at HSBC, Canary Wharf, London and will be hosted by our President, Baroness Hazel Byford, DBE. Please contact evelyn.see@leafuk.org to register your free place or call 024 7641 3911.

LNFYS Video

Old Mcdonald had a farm! New LNFYS Video

One of the great things about Let Nature Feed Your Senses is that it has enabled visitors to connect with animals through their senses while out and about in the countryside. We thought we’d make a little film highlighting some of the animals (farmed and wild) that visitors have enjoyed. So hit play and turn up the volume … the joy is infectious!

LEAF Marque

2013 Contract opportunities

Our partnership with Unilever UK and ADM, to increase LEAF Marque certified oilseed rape has been really well received. We have met our targets for the 2012 harvest and are now looking for farmers to register with ADM for 2013 contracts. LEAF’s partnership with Unilever UK and ADM is for the long-term. It contributes to Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan which requires all of its oilseed rape, used in spreads, margarines and mayonnaise products, to be sustainably sourced by 2020. If you would like to know more about contract opportunities, please contact Stuart Carpenter at ADM tel: 01223 265160. Click here to find out how to become LEAF Marque certified.
